Where it all began…

I was so touched by a tournament poster GM Ian Rogers gave me as a gift – Experienced vs Rising Stars.

Since I started a junior chess tournament called Rising Stars, I was thinking that maybe I should organise a similar event. What has driven me even more is that I have known so many amazing chess organisers and arbiters in Australia, who have contributed so much to this game; and they are more than adequate chess players!

All of them are honorary members of the ACF, and they have received Purdy and Koshnitsky Medals.

Experienced Team Bios

  • Born in 1966, ACF Rating: 1921, Peak Rating: 2084.

Mathematics lecturer and tutor at Western Sydney University. Cat lover.

He has run St George Chess club for over 35 years.

International Arbiter, and Chief Arbiter for many top Australian chess tournaments.

For JZMC and Jilin: Charles has supported many JZMC events with great passion, such as the Rising Stars Championships, the Junior Grand Prix and the JZMC Weekender. The young chess players and I are very grateful for his dedication and commitment.

  • Born in 1944, ACF Rating: 1748, Peak Rating: 2000.

Computer Systems Engineer; favourite hobby is music, particularly opera.

Richard accompanied his son to a chess tournament in 1990, and was invited to join the NSW Junior Chess League (NSWJCL) as Treasurer. He has been there ever since, and has held various positions on the NSWJCL Council over the past 32 years. However, he had been involved in adult chess administration as early as the 1960s!

Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the general division in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours List due to his contribution to chess.

For JZMC and Jilin: Ever since July 2017 when I first met Richard, he has always been there running chess tournaments during the school holidays, as well as the state school championships. These have helped a lot of junior chess players, including my own children, and many, many of my students. His commitment and perseverance is just amazing.

  • Born 1948, ACF Rating: 1706, Peak Rating: 1931.

Managing his own business successfully, chess comes well behind other essentials in his life. He is a great runner – marathon 42.2k in 2 hours 48 minutes – and an avid motorcyclist – average 40,000ks per year.

He has run the Rooty Hill Chess Club for nearly 30 years.

For JZMC and Jilin: My children started playing at Rooty Hill Chess Club in 2018. I am very thankful for Peter’s work at the club, always punctual and organising so many FIDE rated tournaments. They were running smoothly even during the pandemic years. He also supported junior players; I was so touched to see him teaching young beginners at the club patiently, almost every week.

  • Born in 1939. ACF Rating: 1391, Peak Rating: 1839.

Retiring in 2007 after 40 years as a practicing lawyer, his hobbies are Bach, Handel, Mozart and opera.

Frank has played at North Sydney Chess Club and its predecessor Chatswood Chess Club (as well as others) since the 1960’s.

He edited the ACF Newsletter between 2017 and 2021.

For JZMC and Jilin: When I first came to Australia and didn’t know how to find enough tournaments to qualify for the Australian Olympiad Team, Frank gave me detailed guidelines. He also helped the first Women’s World Champion from China, Xie Jun, after she won the title. Amazingly, she still has special memories of that. I really like Frank’s elegant way of writing in English; it’s so precious for me.
